It's taken me the longest to love of his four symphonies, but I am now hooked on Brahms 1. And I'm looking for a new version - specifically, one with a really powerful first movement, where those timpani and strings are at their most intense and foreboding. I have Dohnanyi, Wand, Levine CSO, Klemperer (all terrific), Karajan 1980s and Sanderling (both fine), but wondering if there is an ur-Brahms 1 out there, with terrific power through that first movement.
